Regarding Ubuntu - Simplicity is the mother of invention. Though my heart is with Slackware, I've become a real fan of Debian based distros. Text based config file just seem natural to me.

I just looked up Slackware on Wikipedia. Did you get this to run on a laptop?

Actually, I run Slack on both my fileserver and workstation. However, I run Debian unstable on my laptop. Nonetheless, Slack will run fine on your laptop. I believe you'll find this site helpful.
