The Death of My Mechanical Pencil

The Death of My Mechanical PencilAfter almost twenty years of use, my mechanical pencil finally failed a few weeks ago. Almost all of my entire higher mathematics knowledge was handled with this pencil. This pencil was older than my eldest son, who will be turning 18 next month.

It was very unimaginative of me to just throw this thing in the recycle bin. I should have made a short documentary about the pencil—or maybe a musical interlude. This sort of thing is not beyond me. Click on the digital audio track, the instrumental “Timex Sinclair” in my blacktronic bolongo collection. The Timex Sinclair was the computer I never had. I asked for it as a child but didn’t get it…

The death of my mechanical pencil is a wakeup call for me—my 40th birthday is coming! There is great line from Steely Dan… “She thinks I’m crazy… but I’m just growing old…” So it may seem crazy to sit around and write about my mechanical pencil. So I won’t go through my calculator collection that I treat like a rock-n-roll guitar collection. Consider yourself spared and sorry for wasting your time…
