We continue to number thirteen selected from Dr. Jerry Agada’s labor of love, Five Hundred Nigerian Poets. This Aboki Publishers volume, shipping from 43 New Bridge (Otukpo) Road in Makurdi, Benue State, sings with diversity. It is a rich tapestry of creative vision.

Abiyu Abdullahi Jibia, our carefully chosen one, unlike most others in this compilation, is listed without academic qualifications. He is listed simply as a poet and a writer. No complaints or aspersions here.

Full credit goes to Saundra Quarterman, following up her 12/2010 collection of young poets, with an insightful focus on one bright talent, Kai Davis.

This description of Kai works well: “Kai is? a high school senior who is part of the Philly Youth Poetry Movement.” Her work speaks for itself and it is burning through YouTube.com!

My mother made sure that young Bryan Wilhite, me, was aware of public television—1970s public television. I took that seed and grew independently into strange programs in the authentically artsy 1980s like Alive from Off Center. Ever since the invention of the searchable Internet, I have been looking for a dance piece I saw on this program (I think) called The Jinx starring a dancer called Vain Vest.

It is very, very difficult to film dance such that the motion picture is part of the dance. According to my teenaged opinion, I was certain The Jinx achieved this. I have not seen this presentation since I was a child and I am looking forward to finding out what I think of now.

This ongoing search led me to a collection of digitized art pieces from this sadly unique program. It is sad because there should have been more and more of these programs for public consumption for other searching teenagers growing up after me.

We here in the kinté space proudly present Daniel Pauly’s keynote speech at SeaWeb’s Seafood Summit 2010. Daniel Pauly is featured in Rupert Murray’s searing yet entertaining documentary, The End of the Line.

From Wikipedia.org: “Daniel Pauly is a French-born marine biologist, well-known for his work in studying human impacts on global fisheries. He is a professor and the project leader of the Sea Around Us Project at the Fisheries Centre at the University of British Columbia. He also served as Director of the Fisheries Centre from November 2003 to October 2008. …Pauly was born in Paris, France. He grew up, however, in Switzerland in what was called a strange ‘Dickensian’ childhood where he was forced to stay as a live-in servant to a new family. Through the first 16 years of his life, Pauly lived an inward life as he was half-black in an all white town, finding solace in books/reading and model construction. At 16 he ran away and put himself through high school in Wuppertal, Germany after one year working with disabled people for a local church-run institution. His work led to a scholarship to the University of Kiel.”
